“Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me.”
John 15:4
Set aside intentional time in God’s Word this season to again discover what it truly means to abide in Him. Let the start of a new year become an opportunity to begin or strengthen the habits and rhythms that anchor you in the rest that is offered by Jesus. A Bible reading plan is not simply something to complete; it is a tool God uses to shape your heart and draw you into the likeness of Christ.
The aim of Abide is to pause long enough to ask, “Does this part of my life lead me deeper into His presence? And if not, how can it change?” As you journey through this season, consider inviting a friend to walk with you for encouragement and accountability.
Take time to reset your daily, weekly, and monthly habits as a first step toward intentional spiritual formation—growing in your relationship with God and becoming more like Jesus. We often slip into patterns that distract us or dull our ability to hear and follow the Holy Spirit.
Step back and evaluate: What do I have? What do I need? Look closely at the rhythms that shape your days. What strengthens my relationship with God? What weakens it? Create space to reassess where you are flourishing and where growth is still needed. The suggestions that follow are simply a starting point as you begin this new year.
As we grow into healthier followers of Jesus, some old habits must be released and replaced with new rhythms that help us abide. Before moving forward, let’s agree on this: everything in this guide exists to help you practice following Jesus—not to perform for Him or to earn His approval. It is meant to slow you down so that you can remain in the Vine.
So we begin this year with a simple, single rule: slow down and abide with Jesus.
Here are a few ways to practice this:
Use this Abide month to read Scripture with the provided plan and practice these disciplines as the Holy Spirit leads.
Choose a journal and write out your reflections using the SOAP method each day you read.
Scripture
After reading your passage,
write the verse(s) the Spirit
draws to your attention. Read
the passage again slowly.
Observations
Ask key questions to understand what you’re reading. What is happening in the context? What does this reveal about God? About people? Is there a command or principle to follow? How does it point to Jesus and
the good news? (Think SWORD Method.)
Application
Consider how this truth applies
to your life. Write the personal response you believe God is inviting you to make.
Prayer
Write a simple, sincere prayer expressing what God has shown you. Pray your written words, and continue with spontaneous prayers of praise, gratitude, confession, or request.
As we begin the new year, we want to learn from Jesus—just as He invites us to in Matthew 11:29. Use the SOAP method as you walk through the reading plan and spend time with Him.
